![]() Sente's Goban is a virtual board which does a great many things, chief among them creating self-documenting Go games (Goban uses SGF files), watching or playing games on the major internet Go servers, replaying famous (and infamous) games of better players (or oneself), AND, LAST BUT NOT LEAST allowing you to humiliate yourself by playing against GNU Go 3.4 (or 3.6 if you download the latest) - which plays at the level of any 12-year old Japanese kid who's played for a few years. "Goban" is the Japanese word for the board on which one plays Go, and prices for these border on the ridiculous (primarily because Gaia does not grow 700 year old plum-yew trees fast enough to meet demand). ![]() (I assume the clock only works for network play?) And a little documentation would have been dearly appreciated for these more obscure features.īut it's free, so those are only observations, not complaints! For the price, this is a super-sweet little program which will let you enjoy a game against the computer (until you are about 10 kyu or so, at which point you ought to be able to kick Gnu Go 3.7's butt regularly) and give you access to view all those downloadable professional game files, and your own online game SGFs, with ease. ![]() (Attempting to use them at all is one of the few things that glitches the program up!) There are some features-such as using a timer-which apparently can't be activated at all. It would be nice if the SGF editing features were easier to use. SGF files with alternate paths and on-the-board notations don't work quite so well. Goban is fabulously easy to use as a game, or as a bare-bones SGF viewer. I have not attempted to download 3.9 and use it as an alternate player, to be fair, but my attempts to do the same with other Go game engines have all failed. It comes with Gnu Go 3.7 built in, but Gnu Go is now up to 3.9. The only reason I have not given it a full 5 stars is that it could use some updating and minor feature adds/fixes. I have only used it to play against the computer, as I use KGS's client software when playing on the server. I've been using this program for quite a while, almost daily, and have been very happy with it.

I have been forced to buy beds elsewhere which were delivered within 2 days. However, I still requested a refund and have not received this after over a month of waiting. I queried this because of the right to cancel within consumer law. They told me that they would take 60 pounds because they had paid the delivery company and this payment was non refundable. I asked for a refund, especially as I had contacted them within an hour of the order to make clear the urgency. I cancelled the order because the advertised delivery time was false. After several emails it became apparent that the delivery would not even take place within 10 working days. Within an hour of the order, I contacted this "business" to make sure that the delivery would be within 5 working days rather than the 10. My brother has very little money so I mistakenly ordered from this "business" because of the the special offer prices in March. I ordered two beds for my elderly brother to be able to return home from hospital. ![]() that the word "caron" derives from the Russian word короной (or the related word some other Slavic language) meaning "crown" or "corona", as the accents sits on top of a letter like a little crown (suggested by Alexander Savenkov in December 2003).that the word "caron" is a portmanteau for "caret" (a inverted v shaped editorial symbol used to indicate an ommission) and "macron" (a diacritic mark shaped like a horizontal line that is placed over a letter), the name suggesting the (inverted) shape of the caret and the above-letter positioning of the macr on (suggested by James Naughton in October 2001).( aside to editor) Just change them all to "WITH CARON" and let's move on.Ī couple of the more serious etymologies that have been proposed for the word "caron" are : ![]() Dismissed, Corporal.Īnd seven years later Unicode guru Ken Whistler suggested that the following little dialogue at an ISO committee meeting may be closer to the truth:ĭelegate from Slovakia: You can't spell "WITH HACEK" that way - it has a hacek on the C.Ĭonvenor from Switzerland: Well, we can only use ASCII A-Z in character names.ĭelegate from Slovakia: Well, it's spelled wrong, and that isn't acceptable to us.Ĭonvenor from Switzerland ( with a straight face): In Swiss French we call it a "caron", and there wouldn't be any trouble spelling that.Ĭonvenor from Switzerland: Yes, so let's just use that term instead. How These Things Get Started, Chapter Two In 2001 Unicode Vice President Rick McGowan wrote a short tongue-in-cheek screenplay explaining how the term might have come into being : ![]() ![]() The question of the caron has time and time again vexed the Unicode and Unicore mailing lists, but thusfar no-one has been able to pin down when the term was coined or what the etymology of the term is. Until the recent popularisation of Unicode, the term caron seems to have been virtually unknown outside of character encoding standards, and has no obvious etymology or source, whereas the Czech name háček (diminutive form of hák "hook") was and still is a widely-used name for this mark (it is also less-commonly referred to as a wedge, inverted circumflex or inverted caret). The Holy Grail for historians of character encoding is to discover why the háček ( ˇ)-a diacritical mark which looks like an inverted circumflex-is called a caron in character encoding standards such as Unicode. The subtitle Beyond Gotham is indeed fitting for the main game, but a huge chunk of time is spent either on Brainaic’s ship or on the Lantern planets, making this a combination of a Green Lantern/Batman game more so than a DC Universe title: You get to spend time in the backwards Bizarro universe in Bizarro World, Lian Yu in the Arrow content and Krypton during its final days in the Man of Steel.
